A new and important book on the relatively unknown Lorraine Campaign in France in 1944.
"The Command Is Forward", The 101st Infantry Regiment In Lorraineby James HaahrThis welcome and important addition to the Yankee Division's history in WW II examines the Lorraine Campaign in 1944 in Northeast France. It looks at that bitter campaign from two sides: ours, as members of the Yankee Division -- and from the perspective of the Germans we fought. The Foreword to the book was written by Anthony Kemp, a military historian and author of a number of books on WW II, including Lorraine Journal Pictorial, The Unkown Battle: Metz, and Metz 1944. The book includes numerous combat photographs as well as maps showing where the three regiments of the 26th "Yankee" Infantry Division and other US units of the XIIth Corps fought. The book combines unpublished war diaries and campaign reports by American and German commanders. It includes some 180 pages of first-person narratives of combat actions and engagements. These stories are written in stark and vivid terms that portray the violence and bloody fighting of our role as infantrymen. Chapter I is the complete, unpublished text of the Commandant's War Diary of the 101st Infantry Regiment from August 24, 1944, to May 9, 1945. Chapter II is the first-person Campaign Report of the General commanding the German 361st Volks Grenadier Division from October 1944 to mid-November 1944. The 101st faced this unit on Hill 310 in early November 1944. Read what he says about what his troops encountered when he met us at Moyenvic and Hill 310. Chapter III is the first-person Campaign Report - in two parts - by General von Wietersheim, Commander of the 11th Panzer Division, covering operations from September 1944 to mid-December 1944. This is the tough German outfit that the 26th Division and the 4th Armored Division faced in Lorraine in October 1944 and later after the beginning of the Third Army Offensive. Read his account of the engagements around Bezange-la-Petite and Moncourt Woods east of Nancy. Chapter IV contains the personal narratives of combat actions and engagements by men of the 101st, including POW accounts. World War II buffs, military history researchers, military historians, anyone who likes highly readable military history, and above all, veterans, family members, relatives, and friends of those who served will want to read this book.
